Waste and recycling
Reduce, re-use, recycle
By reducing the amount of waste we produce, we can divert waste from landfill and reduce the risk of climate change.
The traditional method of disposing of our rubbish has been to bury it in landfill sites. However the environmental implications of landfill are massive. The main problem lies with biodegradable waste which is basically anything that rots - paper, cardboard, garden waste, kitchen waste, wood, textiles and disposable nappies. As it rots in landfill it produces methane - a gas 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.
With the cost of disposing rubbish in landfill sites continuing to increase each year we need to reduce, reuse and recycle more of our waste to cut green house gases and avoid huge increases to our local council tax.
