Malham calamine mine

Malham calamine mine

19^th Century calamine mine which supplied zinc ore mainly to the brass makers of Cheadle, Staffordshire. The calamine was calcined (roasted) at a smelt mill on Malham Moor, transported by pack horse and cart to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal wharves in Gargrave from where it was taken to Staffordshire.

Victoria Cave

Discovered in 1837, the thick clay deposits in this cave have provided scientists with an amazing record of climate change across the Dales over thousands of years. Excavations have found 130,000 year old hippo, elephant and hyena bones and evidence of Roman usage of the cave, possibly as a shrine.

Langcliffe High Mill

One of Yorkshire’s earliest and largest cotton mills, this mill was built in 1783-4 by Claytons and Walshman and was in use until the mid 1950s.

An 18^th or early 19^th century fountain built from stone which was used to water cattle for many years.

Attermire rifle range, Settle

OS Grid Reference: SD838641

Mid 19^th century shooting range set up for the Settle Volunteers, a rifle corps which was set up by the County lieutenant in response to the threat of war with France. The range was re-used in both the First and Second World Wars.

Attermire Cave

OS Grid Reference: SD841641

This cave appears to have been used during the Neolithic and early Bronze Age, then abandoned and possibly blocked up until the Romano-British period when it may have been used as a shrine.
